Four decades after first playing at Manchester's Haçienda, Laurent Garnier remains a unique and influential DJ and producer, with an understanding of dance music as a compositional form rather than a mere sequence of loops. Known for listening to hundreds of new releases every day, he released four mixes this spring to mark fabric's 25th anniversary, reflecting his broad musical spectrum in each: UK-focused, house, techno and downtempo. It is this insatiable curiosity and universal understanding of music that have consistently set him apart as a DJ, even among his peers. Garnier has massively reduced his tour schedule, now only playing a few gigs a year. This makes it all the more special to hear him at this edition of Klubnacht alongside a new generation of French producers such as Emi Ömar: over the past four years, the Parisian hardware nerd has elegantly explored the boundaries between house, disco, funk and electro on various EPs, without missing a beat. With releases on Brooklyn label Major Records and British labels Shadow Pressings, Non Stop Rhythm and Indulgence, DJ Split is one of the most exciting newcomers putting his own stamp on the classic Chicago house sound. Tonight he will be playing at Panorama Bar for the first time.
