Steel City Dance Discs is the label of Australian DJ/producer Mall Grab, taking over Panorama Bar tonight with a raw, often ironically broken rave aesthetic. After years of sparse industrial experiments, Scottish duo Clouds has found a new functional power. Less narrative and more physical, their sound with S.C.D.D. is characterized by architectural precision and distorted textures. DJ Heartstring provides a counterpoint: the Berlin duo deconstructs the euphoria of the late 90s. Their “trance dance music” approach dispenses with overly obvious kitsch, focusing instead on a reduced melancholy, rooted in the club with high bpm and dry percussion. X-Coast acts as an archivist of the rave continuum, collaging jungle and breakbeat setpieces into contemporary hybrids. This referentiality culminates in the back-to-back set by Juicy Romance and Partiboi69, whose musical aim is the interlocking fusion of ghetto tech with fast house grooves.
